Servus, Nene! Nathaniel Brown – known as Nene – will be sporting the FC Bayern jersey from next season. The lightning-fast wing-back has made the move from Eintracht Frankfurt to the German record champions. Here's a look at our new signing.
After Germany’s opening World Cup match against Curaçao (7-1), Brown couldn’t stop grinning. “It’s just incredible. My first World Cup match and I score a goal and provide an assist straight away – I don’t think it could have gone any better,” said the wing-back. Just over six months after making his debut for the national team, the 23-year-old suddenly found himself on the big stage of the World Cup and had finally caught the eye of German football fans.
Even though Germany’s World Cup adventure in North America ultimately turned out to be anything but what they'd hoped for, with the team being knocked out in the round of 32, the young defender’s performances will be fondly remembered. With his bursts of pace and dangerous set pieces, Brown was one of the bright spots in the squad. From Bundesliga rising star to World Cup starter, it was the next step in the Amberg-born player's meteoric rise, which has now entered a new chapter at club level with his move to FC Bayern – and he's set to become a key pillar of the national team as it rebuilds after the summer.
"My first World Cup was a very special experience for me - both in positive and negative ways. Representing Germany at a tournament like this is an enormous honour. That makes it hurt even more that we have disappointed so many of you. For that, we can only apologise. I will continue to do everything I can to play my part in making Germany proud again,” wrote Brown on X.
Brown has been a Bundesliga player since the summer of 2024 and scored seven goals and providing 10 assists in 59 Bundesliga appearances for Eintracht Frankfurt. The defender owes this record – which would do credit to many a forward in the German top flight – in part to his versatility. As well as playing at left-back and, on occasion, right-back, Brown was frequently deployed in an attacking role on the wing. “He has fantastic qualities. Good players can be deployed anywhere, and he'll play an important role for us in any position,” said Albert Riera, Frankfurt’s former coach, singing his praises.
In what turned out to be rather a mixed season for Eintracht, Brown was a breath of fresh air – and an absolute mainstay. Brown scored four goals and provided four assists in 33 Bundesliga appearances, plus two further assists in his first Champions League campaign, in which he featured in all eight of the Eagles' matches. Small wonder, then, that he was named Player of the Season by the Eintracht fans, securing 51 percent of the vote.
Brown is technically gifted and tactically astute, but what really stands out is the youngster’s tremendous pace. “My speed is my strength. I want to get forward and think like an attacker,” he explained at his unveiling in Frankfurt. Last season, he was clocked at 35.8 km/h in the Bundesliga, narrowly missing out on a place in the top 10 fastest players in the competition.
Brown’s speed often makes the difference, particularly when transitioning. He can get away from his opponents with his quick bursts of pace or, in defence, catch them in a sprint. Spain’s Lamine Yamal learned that the hard way in December’s Champions League clash. Despite Barcelona’s 2-1 win, the attacker was clearly annoyed when he was taken off in the 89th minute, having previously struggled against Brown's defending. His performance that evening “was okay, I think,” remarked Brown mischievously afterwards. Not only had he set up Frankfurt’s opener, but he had also “managed to rattle him [Yamal] a bit on one or two occasions.”
As well as the Champions League, Brown also gained valuable experience with Eintracht in the Europa League, where their run in the 2024/25 season only came to an end in the quarter-finals against Tottenham Hotspur, who went on to win the trophy. And most recently, he took to the biggest stage in world football at the World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the USA. Yet Brown could well have experienced the World Cup from a different perspective. As the son of an American, the rising star would also have been eligible to play for the co-hosts, but he opted for Germany. “I was born here and also played for the U21s,” he said, explaining his decision.
Born in Amberg, Bavaria, Brown began playing football at his local club, TSV Kümmersbruck. Even back then, his jersey bore the name Nene – the nickname his mother had given him, as "Nathaniel Brown" was a bit too unwieldy for people in the region. After a spell at Regensburg, the defender progressed through the youth ranks at Nürnberg, for whom he made his Bundesliga 2 debut in March 2023 at the age of 19. This was followed by the next logical step in his career, signing for Frankfurt – and now the move to Germany’s double winners.
The fact that Brown will now return to Bavaria – and back home – is likely to please his family in particular, who remain a central part of his life to this day. Although Brown has little contact with his biological father these days, his relationship with his mother is all the closer. She was even there in person to watch his World Cup debut in the USA. After finishing school, the family man also completed his training as a sports and health coach at his foster father’s gym in Kümmersbruck.

“He’s a really lovely person, a really lovely guy who’s very humble and very eager to learn. He’s also got a bit of a mischievous streak, which I really like,” revealed then-Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann about Brown, who, with these qualities, is sure to fit perfectly into the team at his new club. Nagelsmann did, however, have one criticism of his protégé: “Sometimes I wish he’d have more confidence in himself. I don’t think he realises just how good he is yet,” said the former Bayern coach.
So FC Bayern fans can look forward to a real boost to the squad.
