UEFA confirmed that it has provisionally suspended Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni for one Champions League match, ruling him out of Wednesday’s return against Real Madrid in Spain at 21:00.
Last Tuesday’s Champions League play-off first leg ended 0-1 after Vinicius broke the deadlock, and the match became fractious. The Brazilian then accused Prestianni of racially abusing him, accusations the Benfica player denied.
UEFA opened an investigation into alleged discriminatory behaviour, appointing an ethics and disciplinary inspector. The case is being handled by its Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body.
The provisional measure does not affect any decision that may follow once the inquiry concludes.
Benfica reiterated unwavering support for Prestianni’s version of events in an English-language statement on its website. The club expressed regret at being without the player while the process continues and will appeal the decision. It also underlined its commitment to opposing all forms of discrimination.
