Gil Vicente ‘tried to re-sign’ Benfica striker Gustavo Varela | OneFootball

Benfica’s pre-season opened without Gustavo Varela in the group at Seixal, leaving the 21-year-old forward’s future unresolved.

Record reports that he spent last season on loan at Gil Vicente and the Minho club sought to bring him back, but he does not want a return to Barcelos. He is the son of Fernando Varela, the former Casa Pia centre-back.

He is being monitored by Venezia of Serie B, as well as Paris FC, Parma and Auxerre, clubs in the first division. PAOK have also kept tabs on the striker.

No formal offer has reached Benfica. If his situation is not resolved next week, he would report to Nélson Veríssimo when the squad begin work on six July.

For Gil Vicente he made 33 appearances, 32 in Liga Portugal Betclic and one in the Taça de Portugal, across 1,617 minutes. He scored seven goals and provided three assists, and is valued at three million euros.
