Manchester United are ready to rival Europe’s elite to sign Mexican wonderkid Gilberto Mora, according to a new report.

World Cup Wonderkid

Mora, 17, became the youngest player to represent Mexico at the World Cup during the opening match against South Africa in the nation’s capital city.

El Tricolor emerged 2-0 winners, with the attacking midfielder coming off the bench in the 66th minute in a chaotic game that saw three players sent off as South Africa were reduced to nine men.

Mexico have followed this up with back-to-back wins over South Korea and the Czech Republic, qualifying for the knockout phase at a canter. Mora made his first World Cup start in the latter match, becoming the tournament’s sixth youngest debutant ever.

The current record holder is Manchester United legend Norman Whiteside, who made his first appearance for Northern Ireland at 17 years and 42 days against Yugoslavia in the 1982 World Cup in Spain.

Despite his tender age, Mora has long been a first-team player for his side in Mexico, Club Tijuana, who finished ninth in Liga MX last season. He made his debut as a 15-year-old, and has returned 10 goals and two assists in 53 appearances for Los Xolos, becoming the youngest ever goal-scorer in Mexico’s top division.

But it is the maturity that the Tuxtla Gutiérrez native demonstrates on the ball which really stands out, possessing an immaculate first touch and dizzying dribbling. He constantly scans the pitch, ESPN analyses, and is capable of providing a deadly through ball as well as showing excellent decision-making in possession.

It’s little surprise the record-shattering starlet has caught the attention of top clubs in Europe, including the Red Devils, who have all dispatched scouts to Mexico to watch him in action this month.

Eyed by Europe’s Elite

TEAMtalk reveals United were “among a host of European giants represented at the Azteca Stadium” to run the rule over Mora, with Chelsea and Manchester City officials also in attendance. Arsenal and Liverpool are both said to be suitors as well.

“The 17-year-old attacking midfielder produced an outstanding display, as Mexico completed a perfect group-stage campaign with a comfortable 3-0 victory over the Czech Republic

“Mora started in the Mexican capital and dominated proceedings from the opening whistle, showcasing the composure, intelligence and creativity that have made him one of the most coveted young players on the planet.

“The Club Tijuana star’s performance was rewarded with a standing ovation from the home crowd when he was withdrawn late in the game after helping Mexico secure a third consecutive win and maximum points from their group.”

Real Madrid are considered frontrunners for the youngster, though Atletico Madrid and FC Barcelona are said to have “both made it clear they view Mora as a future superstar.”

Elsewhere in Europe, the list of admirers is “equally impressive with Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig are all understood to be keen”.

However, United are said to be the “most aggressive of the Premier League clubs” pursuing Mora, with Old Trafford chiefs having maintained “regular contact” with the player’s camp to “position themselves strongly for any future move.”

Since INEOS took charge of the Red Devils in 2024, the hierarchy have demonstrated a renewed focus on signing the best young talent from across the globe. The capture of Chido Obi and Ayden Heaven from Arsenal has been balanced by deals for Paraguay’s Diego Leon and Mali wonderkid Sekou Kone.

But Mora looks to be a cut above virtually every player in his age bracket, as his suitors in Europe illustrates. If United can pull off a deal to sign football’s next superstar, it may just prove to be one of INEOS’s best pieces of business yet.
