Gimenez reflects on early days at AC Milan: ‘The first month was difficult, but I’m starting to adapt’ | OneFootball

Although AC Milan have endured a tough spell for wide parts of this season, former Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez has no regrets about his move to San Siro.

Gimenez swapped Rotterdam for Milan in early February for a record fee of €32m, but immediately faced adversity as the Rossoneri were knocked out of the Champions League by his former employers in the knockout play-offs.

In his first two league matches, the 23-year-old striker was successful with two goals, but he has not scored in the last five Serie A matches. In the meantime, Milan as a whole haven’t performed well, resulting in a lot of criticism as the side sit ninth in the league.

“We’re not going through the best period,” Gimenez admits in an interview with Mexican media, “but I’ve been welcomed in the best possible way. I want to be an example to everyone and make people understand that everything is possible.

“When I arrived at the club, I only realized how big it is. You can feel it from the outside, but once you’re inside, you feel it even more. The club is gigantic.”

“I’m living my dream. The first month was difficult, there were a lot of changes. Everything was new. Now I’m slowly starting to adapt.”

In that respect, the international period arrives at an interesting time for Gimenez. With Mexico, he will play against Canada in the semi-final of the CONCACAF Nations League. Whether national coach Javier Aguirre will give him a starting place on current form remains to be seen, with Raúl Jiménez (Fulham) a strong competitor.
