Manchester United could be tempted to consider defensive reinforcements this summer, even though the midfield is likely to be at the forefront of their transfer activity. The Red Devils broke the bank to improve their attack last summer and have reaped the benefits of that investment this season.

United have scored 66 goals in 37 Premier League games this campaign, the third most in the league and only three fewer than league leaders Arsenal. It is a massive improvement on the Red Devils’ return of 44 goals in 38 games last season, when they finished 15th.

While United have secured third place in the league this campaign with one game left, the backline remains an issue. The English giants have conceded 50 goals in the league so far, with the Gunners letting in just 26.

The situation has prompted links with several proven defenders from across Europe. One player the Red Devils were previously tipped to move for is Juventus’ Gleison Bremer.

Juventus’ pillar at the back

Bremer rose through the ranks at Deportivo Brasil before joining Atletico Mineiro in 2017. It was at the Belo Horizonte-based club that the Brazilian caught the eye of Torino, who prised him away the following summer.

Bremer went from strength to strength at the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino before Juventus came calling in 2022. The 29 year old has been a mainstay at the back for the Bianconeri ever since his move, with his positional awareness, defensive solidity and leadership qualities making him an asset to the starting XI.

This season, Bremer has registered four goals and three assists in 31 appearances across all competitions for Serie A giants, all but one of which have been starts.

However, with Juventus sitting in sixth position in the Serie A table after 37 games and in danger of missing out on next season’s Champions League, the Brazilian’s future remains uncertain. An update on the situation has now emerged that will please United fans.

United eyeing Bremer

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Bremer could be open to an exit from Juventus this summer. The report states: “With no Champions League football on the cards, the Brazilian defender – who, at 29, doesn’t have much time left to win trophies – will listen to any offers that come in and weigh up his options: Manchester United and Liverpool are both interested in him.”

The report confirms that the Brazilian has a €58 million release clause in his deal that can be triggered within the first ten days of August. Juventus could consider tying him down to a new deal, but their lack of Champions League football could scupper their plans.

The report adds that the player will consider his options after this summer’s World Cup, adding: “The feeling is that after the World Cup with Brazil, Bremer will listen to any potential offers and weigh up his options: staying with the Bianconeri is his priority, but he wants to understand how the new Juventus will take shape and what the club’s strategies will be in the short term.”

Juventus could face financial issues if they end up missing out on the Champions League, and the report points out that Bremer could be the one who is sacrificed.

Final Thoughts

Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez’s recent injury woes, coupled with Maguire’s age, could tempt United into considering Bremer. However, the Brazilian will turn 30 next March, and has missed 71 games for club and country since the beginning of last season. As such, the Red Devils should consider all available options before proceeding.
