Go Ahead Eagles will receive the KNVB Cup from club legend Adrie Steenbergen, should the Deventer team beat AZ Alkmaar in the final of the competition.
“It’s almost a bit awkward when you’re asked to present the cup to Mats Deijl,” Steenbergen responded in the Stentor. “But let me be clear that I think it’s fantastic.” General manager Jan Willem van Dop asked Steenbergen for his reaction. “Jan Willem, thank you very much. You don’t know how proud I am.”
Winning the KNVB Cup would be an absolute highlight, Steenbergen emphasises. “Yes, of course. Although I also found the promotions highlights, you know. I played for Heracles for two years, and that was great fun, but this is my club. I can get sentimental about Go Ahead. If the club is doing well, I am very happy.”
Steenbergen has fulfilled multiple roles at GAE since the seventies. He has been head scout, a board member, team manager and member of the Supervisory Board.
Currently, the 77-year-old Steenbergen is active as match secretary and supporting team manager at Go Ahead Eagles.
