A surprise visit to Säbener Straße: Leon Goretzka stopped by FC Bayern again on Friday. But what was he doing at his former club?

Leon Goretzka has officially not been a Bayern Munich player since June 30. It remains to be seen where the 31-year-old will go next. It was all the more surprising, then, when the longtime Bayern pro suddenly reappeared on the club’s grounds on Säbener Straße on Friday morning.

As reported by the tz, Goretzka did not show up in his training gear, but rather in casual clothes—a black tank top and shorts. The midfielder stayed on the grounds of Germany’s record-holding champions only briefly.

Final formality following his departure from Bayern

According to the report, the reason for his visit was quickly clarified. Goretzka returned his FC Bayern company car, thereby taking care of one of the final organizational formalities following the end of his contract.

During his brief stay, the former national team player also ran into a few familiar faces. From a distance, he waved to his former teammates Serge Gnabry and Lennart Karl, who are currently working on their comebacks and training individually.

On the soccer front, however, the 31-year-old’s future remains open. Now that his contract with FC Bayern has expired, Goretzka is free to sign with a new club without a transfer fee. Most recently, he has once again been linked with a move to FC Barcelona, where his former Bayern coach Hansi Flick is now on the sidelines. Juventus and AC Milan are also said to be closely monitoring the midfielder’s situation.

So far, however, Goretzka has not yet committed to a new club. Since preseason training is already underway at most top European clubs, a decision is likely to be made in the coming weeks. It was also reported recently that, in addition to a move to Italy, a stint in the U.S. could be an option.

The visit to Säbener Straße, however, had nothing to do with a possible return to FC Bayern. Instead, by returning his company car, Goretzka officially parted ways—including from an administrative standpoint—with his longtime employer. After eight years in Munich, the midfielder is now fully focused on finding a new athletic challenge.
