Government approves Order of Civil Merit plaque for Spain’s men’s and women’s national teams | OneFootball

Spain’s Council of Ministers approved on Tuesday the award of the plaque of honour of the Order of Civil Merit to the men’s and women’s national football teams, after the men claimed a second world title on Sunday against Argentina.

Government spokesperson Elma Saiz announced the decision, which came via Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares and on a proposal from Education, Vocational Training and Sports Minister Milagros Tolón.

Saiz pointed to the extra-time 1-0 win in New York, secured by Ferran Torres, and to the public celebrations in Madrid as Spaniards welcomed the team. She appeared after the cabinet meeting beside a poster reading Values of Spain.

She described the honour as recognition of a feat that goes beyond sport and showcases perseverance, effort, sacrifice, collaboration, respect, tolerance and talent. She underlined that Spain is the only country whose men’s and women’s sides have both won the World Cup, recalling the women’s 2023 victory over England in Sydney.

Reflecting on the tournament staged in the United States, Mexico and Canada, Saiz said the team displayed outstanding talent, camaraderie and solidarity, a way of competing that reflects national values. She offered thanks and congratulations to the players.
