FC Bayern’s 2-1 win at Real Madrid has put them in an excellent position for the quarter-finals of the Champions League. The focus after the final whistle was on Munich’s strong performance, but a scene from the closing stages continues to cause debate – and also puts the referee in the spotlight

Shortly before the end of the match, a controversial situation arose in the Royal team’s penalty area. Michael Olise was brought down after a duel with Álvaro Carreras, but referee Michael Oliver allowed play to continue. While the scene initially had little impact on the outcome of the match, an intense debate broke out afterwards

Gräfe speaks of „compelling penalty“

From Bayern’s point of view in particular, the assessment was clear: for many observers, there was a clear foul. Opinions also differed in the analysis on Amazon Prime Video, with several experts at least showing understanding for a possible penalty whistle

Former referee Manuel Gräfe has now also spoken out – and has taken a clear stance. He told BILD: „Bayern could have won 3-1 if referee Michael Oliver had given the penalty to Olise. He is bumped from behind and knocked over. Chris Kramer said in the analysis that he would have whistled it – and that’s exactly what I agree with.“

The former Bundesliga referee’s statement underlines the fact that the scene could well have been assessed differently. Given Harry Kane’s well-known strength from the spot, a third goal for Munich would have been quite likely

Also lucky for Bayern: Gräfe sees critical Tah scene

In addition to the penalty discussion, Gräfe also pointed out a scene in which FC Bayern were lucky in his opinion, involving a duel between Jonathan Tah and Kylian Mbappé

„Bayern were lucky in another scene, however, when Tah was fouled and the ball was already gone. He hit Mbappé’s fibula with his studs, which was dangerous to his health. The Real coach complained after the game, and rightly so,“ continued Gräfe

The former referee thus puts the discussion into perspective to a certain extent and makes it clear that there were controversial decisions on both sides. Nevertheless, the scene involving Olise remains the central point of contention – and shows once again how thin the line is when it comes to decisions at the highest level

For FC Bayern, the discussion ultimately has no direct impact on the result, but it provides additional talking points ahead of the second leg – and underlines how intense and emotional this duel is on and off the pitch.
