Granit Xhaka led a wave of Sunderland posts after a comeback Tyne-Wear derby win at St James' Park, delivering a four-word message to supporters. Sunderland Echo notes that the squad's updates underlined gratitude to the away end and the significance of the result.
Sunderland fell behind early, then produced a resilient second half. Chemsdine Talbi, aged 20 years and 317 days, became the youngest Sunderland player to score against Newcastle in the Premier League, and Brian Brobbey finished as the match-winner.
Goalkeeper Melker Ellborg shared a photo of the jubilant away end, captioned: “Massive win today! Thanks for the support,” with red and white hearts. Omar Alderete posted a celebratory image with “+3”, red and white hearts and a clenched fist. Lutsharel Geertruida added, “Fair to say, Tyne and Wear is…”, a nod to Sunderland's dominance.
Sunderland are unbeaten in their last 11 league meetings with Newcastle. The Magpies have not won this fixture at home in the league since 2010, and have not beaten Sunderland in the league since 2011.
Xhaka, visibly frustrated during parts of the first half, later posted an image from the game with the words: “This one means everything”, plus a red heart and his personal hashtag. Brobbey replied beneath, “Yess my captain”, while other comments called the victory “historic”. Interaction between team-mates in the thread underlined the unity flowing from the result.
