Granit Xhaka’s accounting value at Sunderland helps frame what Chelsea would need to pay, with a modest offer unlikely to stack up for the Black Cats.
According to Sunderland Echo, Sunderland committed around £17.5million to a three-year deal last summer, a cost typically spread across the contract at roughly £5.8million per year.
After one season, about £5.5million to £6million would be written down, leaving an estimated book value of roughly £11.5million to £12million. The exact figure depends on guarantees, add-ons and how elements are treated in the accounts.
A bid near £10million would almost certainly sit below that value and risk an accounting loss. Around £12million to £12.5million edges towards break-even, but not profit.
To post a profit, any fee must exceed the remaining book value. Closer to £15million looks more attractive, while anything approaching or topping the original £17.5million would recover most of the outlay.
Numbers are only part of the picture. Xhaka is captain and central to Régis Le Bris’ midfield, so Sunderland do not want to sell and are unlikely to entertain a small gain unless an offer is too good to ignore.
