Gabriele Gravina has resigned as president of the Italian federation, the first major casualty after Italy’s World Cup play-off final defeat to Bosnia on penalties.

He tendered his irrevocable resignation at the start of a meeting with regional federation leaders at FIGC headquarters in Rome. La Gazzetta dello Sport suggests several potential successors for the ‘Azzurra’ dugout are already being considered.

His departure creates a power vacuum, with elections set for 22 June to choose a new president. Further changes within the FIGC hierarchy are anticipated.

Italian media have criticised the management of recent years and the sporting direction of the ‘Nazionale’, led since last summer by Gennaro Gattuso.

Once a new president is appointed, the key task will be naming a new head coach, and it is considered highly unlikely that ‘Rino’ will continue. The report named Allegri, Conte, Mancini and Pep Guardiola among the options.
