Alex Greenwood says her future was destined to be at Manchester City after our captain penned fresh terms with the Club.

The England international has signed a contract extension with the Blues which will keep her at the Joie Stadium until the summer of 2027.

After signing for City in the summer of 2020, she’s since established herself as one of the finest defensive operators across world football.

During her time with City so far, she’s made 152 appearances in all competitions and has helped us to two major honours.

But Greenwood is determined to add to that haul of trophies and deliver for our passionate supporters.

“There were so many [reasons to stay],” she explained.

“Personally, I have so much unfinished business to be done and I love this football club, it feels like home to me now and I feel this is where I belong and am meant to be.

“I’m really excited for what’s to come. I’m excited by the players, the new manager and the start has been really positive but I know there’s still so much more to come from this team.

“I would love nothing more than to lift more silverware at this football club.

“[I’ve developed] massively [on and off the pitch]. I came as a player from Lyon, I’d experienced so much, and I had so much to offer and give. The six seasons I’ve been here, I’ve developed as a player in terms of my position as a centre-back.

“I’ve loved that role, I enjoy playing it and it’s the position where I feel the strongest in and where I get the best out of me in. That’s come with challenges at times, but I’ve loved it.

“Off the pitch, of course, being given the role as captain at this club has not changed me but it’s given me an added responsibility. I love it and I want to lift trophies with this club and it’s nothing short of what these fans deserve.”

Greenwood has led City as Club captain since the start of the 2024/25 campaign following the retirement of Steph Houghton that summer.

For the central defender, she says it’s an honour to wear the Blues’ armband and she paid tribute to her team-mates at the Club.

On being City captain, she added: “It really is a privilege, honestly.

“The girls themselves are incredible to work with, they’re my friends as well. They’re not just team-mates, they’re people I really care about as human beings and that’s really important to me as captain.

“It’s understanding people before they’re players and that’s something and the balance I try to get right a lot because we are humans at the end of the day.

“We spend a lot of time together and we do have a great group of girls who really want to push each other every day to achieve something special here.

“I’ve got a really good feeling about this group. It’s a responsibility, but one I really enjoy and hopefully there’s a reward at the end of it.”
