Greg Ranjitsingh extends his NYCFC stay; what does that mean for Matt Freese? | OneFootball

It feels like this is the summer of contract extensions for New York City FC. James Sands, Kevin O'Toole, and Tomás Romero have all recently signed extensions with the club. Romero is the most recent; his new deal was announced yesterday.

At least, that was the case, as NYCFC announced that Greg Ranjitsingh has also signed a contract extension. The other goalkeeper will be with the club through the 2027-2028 season, with an option to extend for the following campaign. The move to extend the third-choice keeper highlights that the team trusts the two backup players to Matt Freese.

Ranjitsingh, who joined NYCFC before the 2025 season, does not have an appearance with the Pigeons. However, the 32-year-old still brings a wealth of experience, having played and appeared for multiple professional clubs throughout his career. At the same time, it does not seem to bother him, for he has agreed to stay in New York City.

He told newyorkcityfc.com, "Extending my contract with New York City FC means a lot to me. We have a special group here, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue being part of it.  I’m excited to keep bringing energy every day, supporting my teammates and doing everything I can to help the Club succeed.”

Based on his comments, it appears that Ranjitsingh is happy with the team. However, after his and Romero's extensions, this does bring up some concern.

Did both goalkeepers sign new deals based on the fact that the starting role will be up for grabs? In other words, is Freese possibly leaving this summer?

There are reports and rumors of European interest in the USMNT goalkeeper. This is not shocking, for there has been interest in the past. Yet, while still a fantastic keeper, Freese has not been as good this season. He is still one of the top goalkeepers in Major League Soccer, but NYCFC fans know he can be better. Plus, he was not perfect during the World Cup. Everyone saw his blunder during the game against Belgium.

Nevertheless, that is not stopping anyone from inquiring about the NYCFC starter.  And based on the contract extensions, it is easy to believe that Freese's time with NYCFC might be coming to a close. Unless the team goes with a loan deal, which is entirely possible. No matter what, losing him would create mixed emotions.

Alas, the good news is that NYCFC will have some consistency with the contract extensions of Romero and Ranjitsingh.  Both players have the experience that, if needed, even on a temporary basis, they can step in and be the starter.
