Grêmio prospect Luís Eduardo is edging towards more first-team action as academy colleagues break through and places open up in defence.

According to Globo.com, the 18-year-old has travelled to Salvador for the Bahia match and is an option with Balbuena sidelined by muscle pain.

He is the only member of last year’s Brazil Under-17 World Cup trio yet to gain a run, while Gabriel Mec became a starter in April and Tiaguinho is building minutes.

Luís Eduardo has one senior appearance this year, a January win over Guarany de Bagé. Despite limited exposure, Chelsea, Manchester United and Olympiacos have made enquiries.

Brazil went out in the Under-17 World Cup semi-final. He started every game except the defeat to Portugal, when suspended.

With Balbuena absent and Kannemann and Wagner Leonardo struggling, opportunities could open in the Tricolor. It is unclear whether Luís Castro will stick with three centre-backs.

Gustavo Martins, withdrawn after a heavy challenge against Confiança, should be available to partner Viery. The line-up will be set at Saturday morning training in Salvador.

Castro has leaned on academy talent to develop and sell, with Gabriel Mec the standout. Others include Gustavo Martins, Viery, Pedro Gabriel, Vitor Ramon, Gabriel Menegon, Thiago Beltrame, Zortéa and Tetê.
