Grêmio have signed Weverton on a three-year contract running to the end of 2028. According to Globo.com, the 38-year-old is due in Porto Alegre on Friday after Palmeiras released him to join on a free.
The longer deal proved decisive in his departure from the Verdão, where he is an idol. Palmeiras had offered a one-season extension to take his contract to the end of 2027.
Grêmio had sought a renowned goalkeeper to take the number one shirt, with the new board assessing Tiago Volpi, who slipped down the order after starting in 2025.
Weverton arrives as first-choice despite Gabriel Grando extending his deal to the end of 2029. The club's moves point to Volpi as third in the hierarchy, and Grêmio are open to offers, though he does not plan to leave.
The signing aims to end years of uncertainty in goal. Since Marcelo Grohe left in 2019, 12 goalkeepers have featured for Grêmio, with five signings made in the past three years.
A serial winner with Palmeiras, Weverton also played for Remo-PA, Oeste-SP, América-RN, Botafogo-SP, Portuguesa and Athletico-PR. He has been regularly called up by Brazil and won Olympic gold at Rio 2016. He made 454 appearances and lifted 12 trophies across eight seasons with the São Paulo club.
