City have already signed four new players – Rayan Ait-Nouri, Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki and Marcus Bettinelli. However, these are not the only new recruits to join the club.

There has also been major changes in Guardiola’s coaching staff. Former Liverpool coaches Pep Lijnders and James French have moved to the Etihad. They have joined the coaching team alongside former City player Kolo Toure.

Gundogan revealed: “The new people that have come in, especially our new set-piece coach, explain things in a very simple way that I quite like and I know other players also like very much.

“We just try to get the patterns, connections between players. That’s not just set-pieces, that’s also for tactics, the way we play – one of the most important things – creating connections between players, anticipating timings, get to know each other as good as possible.

“Only if we’re connected as good as we can be, we can play amazing football, and we’ve done that in the past.

“It’s about winning that back and I think we’ve started really good in this competition. Now it’s about doing it in every single game better and better.”

The 34-year-old was on target twice as City thrashed Al Ain 6-0, securing their progression to the knockout stages of the Club World Cup.

Gudogan continued: “Yeah I’m happy. Obviously I’m happy.”

“I like to contribute to the team performance. I like to do my best to play good football first of all, but then obviously also successful football.

“I think this team is able to set standards. I think we have shown that in the past. And I’m here to help everyone else to work towards that standard every single day. In training sessions but then also in the games.

“I’m very happy about the team performance in phases and periods of the game. I think there were periods in the first half but especially in the second half, where we should have done better.

“That cost us a little bit at the end, the one goal that we needed to be top of the group ahead of the Juve game.”
