Gus Poyet has praised Dan Neil’s contribution to Sunderland but says the 24-year-old may need to move to secure regular minutes amid uncertainty over his future.
“It’s up to him. If he wants more game time, then he may have to leave, but he could enjoy this season in the Premier League and then get game time if injuries happen.” He told Sunderland Echo.
“But the squad has taken a step up, and it needed to in order to compete in the Premier League.” Poyet also highlighted Neil’s service and last season’s captaincy, adding that current selections have been justified by the team’s position.
With his contract due to expire at the end of the campaign and no extension indicated, speculation over a departure continues. Rangers, Coventry City, Sheffield United, FC Koln and Borussia Monchengladbach have all been linked.
Poyet suggested Sunderland’s upgraded recruitment since promotion and the limited openings under Regis Le Bris in the top flight leave Neil with a decision to make.
