Palmeiras visit Novorizontino on Sunday at 20:30 Brasília time seeking the 2026 Campeonato Paulista, with captain Gustavo Gómez central. According to Nosso Palestra, he is the squad’s longest-serving player.
Gómez became undisputed captain in 2022 after Felipe Melo’s exit, and since then has worn the armband in 75.7% of matches under Abel Ferreira.
He has lifted a club-record nine trophies, overtaking César Sampaio, Ademir da Guia and Junqueira, each with seven. If Palmeiras win on Sunday, the Paraguayan would be the first to reach 10 for the Alviverde.
His captaincy figures underline that status, 13 of 15 in 2026, 52 of 76 in 2025, 45 of 67 in 2024, 62 of 73 in 2023 and 59 of 74 in 2022.
The No 15 narrowly missed double figures last year as Palmeiras finished runners-up in the Paulistão, the Libertadores and the Campeonato Brasileiro. He even said he would swap one of his two previous Libertadores titles for the 2025 title so team-mates without one could enjoy it.
Palmeiras won the first leg 1-0 at Arena Barueri, so a draw in Novo Horizonte would be enough. A win also secures the title, defeat by one takes it to penalties, and losing by two or more hands the trophy to the hosts.
