The saga surrounding Viktor Gyökeres continues. Following Sporting CP president Frederico Varandas' criticism of the Swedish player's agent – Hasan Çetinkaya – and his firm stance on rejecting offers of €60 million for the forward, the tug-of-war between player, agent, and president is set to continue.
In news first reported by Portuguese newspaper A Bola and confirmed by Playmaker's site site Zerozero: if the Lions reject an offer exceeding €60m, the player's agent will have the option to activate a clause that guarantees 10 percent of the deal's value netting him a cool €6m.
This condition was demanded by Hasan before the transfer of the Swedish striker from Coventry City two seasons ago. This clause became active this Tuesday and provides another 'negotiating tool' for Gyökeres' agent who is looking to place the forward in the elite of European football.
Despite this 'threat', Sporting is not looking to yield to the agent. If Hasan shows intent to activate this clause, the board led by Varandas will stretch the negotiations to the limit, and demanding the full €100m buyout clause for the Swede is not considered out of the question.
"I believe Viktor can leave, unless he has the worst agent in the world, which I do not believe because he is one of the best footballers in the world," Varandas said about the transfer.
"Viktor already knows, the agent too, that there are only two scenarios: first, a club respects Viktor's fair market value – not the release fee, Sporting will compromise on that – and from that moment we will be completely prepared.
"In a second scenario, that club does not want Viktor, Viktor does not want any other project, he has three years left on his contract and stays at Sporting."
Gyökeres, it should be noted, has been the best player at Sporting over the last two seasons and achieved historic numbers: 97 goals and 27 assists in 102 matches.
