Viktor Gyökeres believes there is plenty more to come from him after continuing his impressive start to life at Arsenal with another goal in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest.
The Swedish striker struck for the third time in two home games since his summer arrival, easing into the role supporters have long craved; a reliable, top-level centre forward. His performance was another reminder of why Mikel Arteta made him the focal point of a new-look attack, alongside Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze.
Next comes the real test. Arsenal travel to Bilbao on Tuesday night to begin their Champions League campaign, looking to go one better than last season’s semi-final appearance. For Arteta, Gyökeres could be the missing link in a side determined to compete with Europe’s best.
“It’s been very easy to fit into the team,” Gyökeres said. “Of course, it takes some time to adapt to the style of play, but it’s been a good start. Playing with people like this is amazing – they always want to go forward and be a threat. You just have to be in the right positions and you’ll get chances.”
Asked whether the Premier League has been what he expected, the Swede admitted: “It’s a difficult question. I didn’t expect too much. I knew it was going to be a very, very high level and you have to be ready for it. So far it’s been OK. I always try my best.”
Arsenal’s attacking trio looked irresistible against Forest, prompting suggestions they could be the most dangerous forward line in the division. Gyökeres was cautious but upbeat: “There are a lot of teams with great players attacking, but we definitely have amazing players going forward.”
The challenge now is sustaining momentum through a gruelling schedule that has already pitted Arsenal against Manchester United and Liverpool. The Gunners face another tough test next week as Manchester City come to London next.
“It’s been a lot of them in a short period,” Gyökeres said. “But we have to handle that, make sure we’re prepared and do our best.”
With Champions League football followed by another showdown with City at the weekend, there will be no hiding place. Yet Gyökeres has embraced the pressure that came with his £63m signing.
“Of course it’s a big club and there’s going to be pressure,” he added. “But you just try to make the best when you’re out on the pitch and not think too much about it.”
The striker is convinced he has only shown flashes of his best so far. “Yeah, for sure,” he said when asked if more is to come. “You always want minutes, and you get into it easier when you play more. You want to perform and show that you deserve to be on the pitch. That’s what I’m trying to do.”
If his start is anything to go by, Gyökeres is already proving himself as the centrepiece of an Arsenal side ready to dream big in Europe once again.
