Kicker reports that Croatia’s HK Hajduk Split are interested in acquiring FSV Mainz 05’s Marco Richter. The Rheinhessen have been seeking a taker for the former German youth international all summer. Richter recently returned from a loan stint with newly promoted Bundesliga outfit Hamburg, who were not interested in retaining his services in the top flight.
Richter was recently rumored to be on the move to Italy’s Serie A, but nothing more seems to have developed on that front. At present, Kicker reports that there’s been only basic contact between the clubs. Richter has actually not played outside of Germany before. The former Bayern Munich academy man has made 216 competitive appearances for Mainz, Hamburg, Hertha, and Augsburg.
Richter’s current contract with the Nullfünfter runs until 2027, meaning that another year-long-loan can be easily arranged for the 2025/26 campaign. Richter signed with Mainz in August of 2023 after Hertha’s relegation from the top flight. Then considered a €5m-valued player, Richter surely secured a salary for himself not in line with his current €1.5m estimated market worth.
As is always the case with loan deals, the parent club will be seeking some salary relief on whatever arrangement is secured for Richter. Several clubs abroad may be more willing to help out in this regard than German domestic sides. Richter has not featured in any of Mainz’s four pre-season friendlies this year.
