Hamburg CFO insists club hasn’t given up on Arsenal’s Fabio Vieira: “We’ve fallen in love with him!” | OneFootball

Hamburg boss Dr. Eric Huwer has revealed that his Bundesliga club isn’t necessarily prepared to give up on former Arsenal loanee Fabio Vieira yet. On the same day he delivered a special tribute to recently deceased former Hamburg professional Kevin Keegan, Huwer also spoke to Kicker. As HSV training camp kicked off in Längenfeld, Austria, Huwer made clear that his team would very much like its leading goalscorer from last season back. 

Hamburg certainly wouldn’t even still be in the Bundesliga without their blockbuster deadline day signing from last autumn. The attacking midfielder scored more goals (7) than any of the seven strikers in the HSV squad. His five assists in 29 league appearances also led to the 26-year-old leading the squad with 12 scorer points. 

With an estimated market value of €18m, the former Portuguese youth international still falls outside the budget Huwer – the board’s Chief Financial Officer – has available. As Vieira’s time with Hamburg drew to a close, an offer was tendered to the Gunners. Huwer made clear that the player’s salary wasn’t the problem. Understandably enough, it’s that Arsenal aren’t moving.

“We’ve fallen a little bit in love with Fabio and are re fighting for him every day,” Huwer told Kicker. “We’ve given Arsenal the numbers. They’re just not budging yet. We’re confident we can make a competitive offer without breaking the bank.”
