Barcelona’s transfer focus may currently be centred on strengthening the attack, but work is also continuing to reinforce another position that the club does not want to leave exposed next season.

According to SPORT, both Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco believe Barcelona need greater depth in goal, prompting the club to continue monitoring Real Sociedad goalkeeper Alex Remiro.

Notably, the discussion is not necessarily about replacing Joan Garcia. Rather, the club’s sporting department wants to ensure there is reliable competition and cover in a position that became a concern last season.

Garcia’s campaign was disrupted by several injury setbacks, forcing him to miss several matches and forcing Wojciech Szczesny to step in.

This is why Barcelona have returned to Remiro, a goalkeeper who has been admired internally for some time.

There have been contacts

As many as three months ago, a meeting took place in Barcelona between Deco and Remiro’s agents, during which the club’s interest was reaffirmed, and the framework of a potential operation was discussed.

Since then, communication has continued, with Barcelona keeping the possibility of a move very much alive.

The situation appears favourable from multiple angles, as Remiro reportedly has an offer from Barcelona on the table, while Real Sociedad are not expected to stand in the way if the proposed conditions are met.

The Blaugrana, for their part, are prepared to invest around €8 million to complete the signing.

Several caveats

While the interest in Remiro appears genuine, the operation cannot move forward until Barcelona create space within their current goalkeeping department.

The biggest complication remains Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s unresolved situation

Until clarity arrives regarding the German international’s future, Barcelona’s ability to reshape the position remains limited.

Furthermore, there are fewer obstacles surrounding Wojciech Szczesny, as his contract contains a unilateral termination clause worth slightly less than €2 million, making his departure considerably easier to manage if required.

For now, Remiro is waiting for a development that could help him decide his future.
