FC Barcelona face a selection dilemma ahead of the game against Celta Vigo. With numerous injuries in defence, it is up to Hansi Flick to put out the best possible XI.
Flick has confirmed that Jules Kounde is likely to miss the trip to Vigo. This almost locks in Eric Garcia to start on the right, despite his nasal fracture and the protective mask he has been wearing in training.
That leaves Ronald Araujo and Pau Cubarsi as the only options at centre back, with Andreas Christensen out injured. However, Cubarsi is nursing some discomfort, which has prevented him from starting the past couple of games.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Flick could consider deploying Gerard Martin as a centre back against Vigo to mitigate the injury concerns. The German has tried him in this role previously during pre-season.
It was an experiment Flick undertook in the absence of Inigo Martinez. At the time, it was not known that the Spanish veteran would leave the club that summer, but Martin showed enough quality to be trusted in that role.
Celta Vigo are a tricky attack to face and play with intensity. Throwing Martin in at the deep end may not be Flick’s preference. If Cubarsi is fit enough, he is expected to start in that position. If not, we will see what the German decides.
