Fit-again Three Lions skipper’s brace in Riga takes him up to 21 goals for the season already for club and country
Harry Kane believes he is playing the best football of his career right now.
The England striker scored his 75th and 76th senior international goals on Tuesday night, helping the Three Lions to secure qualification for the World Cup with two games to spare as they thrashed Latvia 5-0 in Riga.
It continued Kane’s magnificent start to the season on an individual level, in which he has scored 21 goals and registered six assists in just 13 matches for club and country by mid-October.
That includes 21 goal contributions for his club side Bayern Munich, who already look well set to successfully defend their Bundesliga title after six wins from six to open the campaign.
England also have six wins from six in World Cup qualifying and, with their most recent victory, secured passage through to next summer’s inaugural 48-team World Cup in North America.
“I’d say so,” Kane replied, when asked by ITV whether he is playing at the highest level of his career to date.
“The numbers are obviously there, but I just think the way I’m feeling on the pitch, the way I’m seeing the passes, the runs, I’m physically in a good place.
“So, yes, I’m in a good moment. Hopefully I can keep it going.”
Kane was delighted to be able to celebrate England’s eighth straight qualification for the World Cup, and was determined to ensure that the achievement is not taken for granted.
“Another tournament,” he said. “Sometimes we make it look easy, but these games can be tough, these groups can be tough. Today was at a high, high level.
“Qualifying with two games to go is a great achievement. Zero goals conceded, and [we are] playing some great football.”
Asked if he had worked with a better striker than Kane in his career, England boss Thomas Tuchel said: “He’s on top of the list.
“He’s in top shape, mentally and physically, and full of confidence. A pleasure.”
