At 52, Thomas Tuchel is set to become the third non-English manager to lead the Three Lions at the World Cup. And all this with even greater pressure, given that England are still chasing a title that has eluded them since 1966.

To help him in his mission, however, Tuchel will be able to count on the support of his captain, Harry Kane (32), with whom he has forged strong bonds over the years. A relationship the 32-year-old striker opened up about in an interview with L’Équipe on the sidelines of the tournament.

“We have a very good relationship, which obviously began at Bayern,” Kane recalls. “In fact, his presence on the bench was one of the reasons I signed there (Tuchel left the Bavarian club in the summer of 2024). “At Bayern, I loved his personality, his ideas for the team and the way he got me playing. In a way, he’s carried those methods over to the national team.”

Which was reflected on the pitch. For whilst, as a team, Bayern’s 2023–24 season had proved to be a failure (no titles won), on an individual level, Kane had already succeeded in his mission to leave Tottenham Hotspur.

Used 45 times by Tuchel, the number 9 had struck like lightning, scoring a staggering 44 goals and providing 12 assists across all competitions. It wasn’t enough to save Tuchel’s job on the Munich bench, but it was a good way to lay the foundations for a relationship that the coming summer should strengthen even further.
