Harry Maguire: Fabrizio Romano pens emotional tribute to star | OneFootball

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has received significant praise this week for his performance at Anfield last Sunday.

The United defender scored the winning goal and helped his side restrict Liverpool to one goal to win their first match at the stadium since 2016.

United legends Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and Steve Bruce all waxed lyrical on the defender, claiming he had been let down by the club over the years.

They also stated that they were delighted for the defender to score the goal and keep his critics quiet.

Former United defender John O’Shea, who also scored a winner at Anfield in his career, also revelled in the Englishman’s glory.

Fabrizio Romano praise

Somewhat surprisingly, football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano took to Instagram to write a special tribute to the United defender, highlighting his perseverance.

Romano wrote, “Harry Maguire deserves a special post, in my opinion. Might sound as a different one… but I believe it’s worth it, for football fans and not only.”

He reflected on the tough times three years ago when Maguire was often an internet meme and regularly targeted by football fans all over the world.

The journalist claimed, “it’s too easy now to forget what happened, what he’s had to go through for years and years since he joined Manchester United for that huge transfer fee in 2019. Harry didn’t have any responsibility for that fee… but the level of abuse, attack, stupid posts, “memes” and unfortunately much more on all social media platforms has been something unprecedented. It was horrible.”

Impeccable reaction

Romano asserted that most people could not carry on working under such “unacceptable” abuse but pinpointed Maguire’s strength of character to come through it.

He stated, “Harry never complained. Never overreacted. Never commented or hit back to anyone. Hard work. Keep going. Never giving up. Follow your dream to be Man United player at best level possible.”

The Italian journalist also praised his response to having the captain’s armband taken away from him in 2023 and claimed he continued to “stay focused, help his teammates and generally give 100% in every game or training session.”

He then left on a positive message, highlighting that Maguire’s story could be an inspiration for anyone claiming, “let people talk. Let people criticise. Don’t give up on your dreams. Work harder. Give your best, always… and then beautiful things will come.”
