Harry Maguire has enjoyed an impressive turnaround at Manchester United in recent times.
The 32 year old arrived at Old Trafford in the summer of 2019 from Leicester City. United reportedly paid £80m for Maguire, which was a world-record fee for a defender at that time.
However, the price tag soon became a burden for the England international.
From picking up the armband when Ashley Young left in 2020 to losing it to Bruno Fernandes in 2023, the defender has endured a roller coaster ride at Old Trafford so far.
However, Maguire emerged as a key figure for the Red Devils in the past two seasons, particularly flourishing in the back three under Ruben Amorim.
It now appears that he was a wanted man this summer – and Amorim will be delighted he has remained at Old Trafford.
According to a report from The Athletic, Juventus and Como were among several clubs who were interested in the English defender this summer.
The Bianconeri have had their eyes on Maguire for a while, and a previous report suggested that they also wanted to move for him in January this year. With the transfer failing to materialize, the Old Lady rekindled their interest over the summer.
Como, meanwhile, have taken giant strides under Cesc Fabregas and were keen to add the former Leicester City man to their roster as well.
However, Maguire turned them both down, as he was determined to stay at Old Trafford.
Maguire has been a dependable figure under Ruben Amorim so far. The Englishman has been assured at the back, while also popping up with important goals.
His late winner against Lyon in the Europa League quarterfinals second leg last season raised the roof at Old Trafford.
The centre-bacl was at it again this season, equalizing at the death against Grimsby Town in the EFL Cup Round Two, forcing the game into penalties. While United ended up losing the tie, Maguire’s performance didn’t go unnoticed.
Recent reports have suggested that he is part of Amorim’s core leadership group. The player’s contract with United expires in 2026.
