Leeds United land in the USA today for a three-match tour, a chance to build fitness and lay an early marker. Fringe players have a point to prove to Daniel Farke.
According to yorkshireevenpost.co.uk, Leeds face Wrexham this weekend, then Sunderland and Liverpool, with the tour doubling as auditions for four players. Recruitment continues, with a new goalkeeper targeted and Manchester City’s James Trafford liked.
The No.1 shirt is Lucas Perri’s, with Karl Darlow now at Manchester United and Alex Cairns the only senior back-up. Perri struggled in the Premier League and was dropped by January, though he showed glimpses in the FA Cup. He might depart this summer, but until a signing arrives he remains first choice.
With £34million signing Tarik Muharemovic still on post-World Cup leave, Farke has three senior centre-backs, Sebastiaan Bornauw joining regulars Joe Rodon and Jaka Bijol. Bornauw started five league games, Leeds drew four and beat Brighton 1-0 in May. Injuries could elevate the 27-year-old, so a strong pre-season would help.
Sean Longstaff’s first year never settled, a calf issue stalling momentum while Anton Stach and others kept him out. He still delivered a 97th-minute equaliser at Bournemouth in April. Having left Newcastle to play regularly, the 28-year-old will aim to stake his claim.
Harry Wilson’s quality is clear, but adaptation takes time. The 29-year-old should benefit from Wales team-mates and must connect quickly with first-choice striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin. With Brenden Aaronson on post-World Cup break, the right flank already looks his to lose.
