Aston Villa are preparing for a return to the Champions League, with Unai Emery quickly identifying reinforcements needed to compete on multiple fronts next season.

According to The Daily Mail, Newcastle United winger Harvey Barnes has emerged as a top target at Villa Park. The Europa League champions are looking to strengthen their attacking options, with both Jadon Sancho and Leon Bailey set to depart and Morgan Rogers attracting interest from clubs across Europe.

Barnes enjoyed a strong 2025–26 season at St James’ Park, scoring 16 goals and providing six assists in 57 appearances across all competitions. His direct, pacy style and ability to play on either flank make him an appealing option for a Villa side that will need depth and versatility.

Barnes’ first season at Newcastle was disrupted by injury, but his subsequent campaigns have been far more consistent—though his place in Eddie Howe’s starting XI has often depended on Anthony Gordon’s availability.

With Gordon now set to leave St James’ Park for Bayern Munich, the dynamic at Newcastle shifts. However, the chance for Barnes to join a Villa side offering Champions League football may prove too tempting to turn down.

Barnes, who has been lauded as Newcastle’s ‘best finisher’, is currently valued at around €40m—a fee that represents reasonable value for an established Premier League winger in his prime.

A 2-1 victory over Manchester City on Sunday saw Emery’s men close out their Premier League campaign in style, securing fourth place in the standings.
