For the second time this week, it was a classic at St. James’ Park, this time requiring a penalty shootout to get the win for Newcastle United victory.
In his return to the lineup, Aaron Ramsdale was solid in between the sticks. He made 3 saves in the first half, and by the end of extra time, the 27-year-old made a total of 10 stops on the afternoon.
Harvey Barnes, fresh off writing his name into Newcastle United history with his late winner against Leeds United, continued his fine form. In the 50th minute he finally broke the deadlock, making a great run into the box, and slotting the ball in with his right foot.
Nick Woltemade was the man who found Barnes making that run, showing great vision and patience to find his teammate to provide the assist.
There was more late drama at St. James’ Park, this time through a late penalty. Anthony Gordon stepped up to take it, and drove the ball low and into the left of the net to send the game to extra time.
And once again, Harvey Barnes looked to be the man of the moment, Anthony Gordon sent the ball into the box, with Barnes able to get his head onto the cross, beating Djordje Petrovic in the Bournemouth net, but Bournemouth would respond shortly after to send the game to penalties.
Aaron Ramsdale shone during the shootout, stopping three of Bournemouth’s nine efforts, while Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes both converted their penalties as well to help Newcastle to win in a penalty shootout.
