Manchester United star Diogo Dalot was very impressed with Renato Veiga’s performance for Portugal in their win against Poland on Saturday.

Veiga was a surprise summer arrival at Chelsea with the Blues paying Swiss side FC Basel €14m for the versatile 21-year-old.

The Portuguese has impressed with his early performances for Chelsea and his versatility could prove very important for Enzo Maresca, and he’s already played at left back, centre back and in midfield.

Dalot impressed by Veiga’s Portugal debut

Veiga’s impressive start to the season has seen him called up to the Portugal squad by Roberto Martinez and he made his debut in Friday’s 3-1 win against Poland in the Nations League.

The former Basel man was deployed at centre back alongside Manchester City’s Ruben Dias and the pair coped well with the threat of the in-form Robert Lewandowski.

Veiga has been praised by the media for his performance with Spanish outlet AS describing him as a hidden gem.

Martinez was similarly impressed by Veiga and hailed his mature performance, and now United star Dalot has had his say and believes the Chelsea man is showing his worth.

“Renato Veiga played an excellent game [against Poland], he has been proving his worth. As a team we helped each other a lot.,” he told reporters as cited on X.com.

It’s certainly glowing praise for Veiga and he’s had quite the step-up in his career considering a year ago he was playing in the Swiss League and not many people had heard of him.

The Portugal international is going to be an important player for Maresca, and with all the money spent it appears on early evidence the Blues have got themselves an absolute bargain.

With Marc Cucurella suspended Veiga is likely to face the biggest test of his Chelsea career to date against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, and he’s expected to be deployed at left back.

Given how he’s dealt with everything so far since he made the switch to Stamford Bridge this summer you wouldn’t bet against Veiga rising to the occasion at Anfield.
