“He wasn’t a superstar before Anfield”: Liverpool legend accuses Salah of using media to pressure Liverpool hierarchy
Jamie Carragher has broken his silence on the growing Mohamed Salah saga at Liverpool branding the Egyptian star’s latest comments and behaviour as “a disgrace”.
Salah claimed he felt "thrown under the bus" by the club after being left out of the starting lineup for the last three Premier League game.
Following the dramatic 3 - 3 draw with Leeds United , the 32 year old went as far as to suggest he no longer has “any relationship” with manager Arne Slot.
The Egyptian also hinted that the upcoming Premier League match against Brighton could be his last appearance.
The situation escalated further when Liverpool omitted Salah from the travelling squad for Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League showdown against Inter Milan in Italy.
Speaking on Sky Sports “Monday Night Football” Carragher wasted no time in condemning Salah’s actions after the Leeds match:
“I think what he did was a disgrace,” Carragher declared. “Some tried to label it a moment of emotion but I don’t see it like that. When Mohamed Salah shows up in the mixed zone, something that has happened only four time in eight year.. you know it’s carefully planned move from him and his agent”.
Carragher claimed this wasn’t the first time Salah had used media exposure to build pressure:
“He did it several months ago and I criticised him here as well. He played on the emotions of the fans. Liverpool were top of the league, he had just scored the winner versus Southampton, perfect timing to pressure the owners. We even saw banners all season demanding the club give him what he wanted”.
Carragher believes Salah purposely chose moment of vulnerability for the club:
“He picked this week. I feel like he waited for a bad result. a late goal, the fans deflated, the manager down and then he attacked the manager hoping to get him sacked. That’s what I felt”
Carragher also hit back fiercely at Salah’s claim of being “thrown under the bus”:
“He himself tried to throw the club under the bus twice last year. First, when he attacked the owners despite them paying him hundreds of thousands per week for six year. and second when he complained they didn’t give him new contract at 32 year old when they were under no obligation to do so”
In his most heated remarks, Carragher reminded Salah of where he stood before his Anfield chapter:
“The one thing I want to remind the Egyptian player and perhaps his agent , is that before he came to Liverpool.. he was known as the guy who failed at Chelsea”
And he closed with stark reality check:
“You weren’t massive star before arriving here. You didn’t win anything with Egypt. and no matter how big you become, you still need the help of your teammates”...
Whether this saga marks the beginning of the end for Salah at Anfield remains to be seen.
