Hervé Renard has accepted a short-term deal to lead Tunisia at the World Cup after Sabri Lamouchi was dismissed following the 5-1 defeat by Sweden.
According to L'Équipe, he received a call on Monday at 14:00 in Senegal, where he lives with his family, from his agent and a Tunisian federation official. He had planned to watch the tournament on television while waiting for a national-team post later in the summer.
They asked if he knew the team, he asked if Sabri had gone, and was told a change was coming. Seeing a rare chance, and trusting a hunch, he agreed a deal to the end of the tournament.
He was released by Saudi Arabia in April despite having qualified them for what would have been, for him, a third straight men’s World Cup after Morocco in 2018 and the Green Falcons in 2022, plus a Women’s World Cup in 2023 with France. He nearly took Ivory Coast mid-AFCON 2024 before the French federation stopped the move, and Émerse Faé went on to win the title.
After Monday’s call he flew to Paris, then on Tuesday late morning headed to Mexico to begin work. Japan await Tunisia on Saturday, which is Sunday at six in the morning in France. After a heavy opening loss, whether he can change the picture remains to be seen.
