With Arsenal not in action until Sunday, Gunners fans were watching on as their big-six rivals all played their Premier League fixtures a day earlier.
Manchester United kicked things off with a 3-1 defeat to Brentford, but United’s poor start to the season meant that wasn’t particularly relevant to Mikel Arteta’s side. United sit 14th in the table after six games.
Far more relevant were the points taken off Chelsea and Liverpool later in the day, and a couple of ex-Arsenal strikers were to blame for the two results.

Chelsea had taken the lead at home to Brighton, but momentum swung the other way after a red card for Trevoh Chalobah in the 53rd minute.
It took until the 77th minute for Brighton to take full advantage, with Danny Welbeck rising to power a bullet header into the top corner.
Maxim De Cuyper made it 2-1 in the 92nd minute, before Welbeck made sure of the three points with a left-footed finish for 3-1 in the 100th minute of the game. The striker was booked for his subsequent celebration, but he won’t care much.

With Chelsea failing to leapfrog Arsenal, the question was whether Liverpool could extend their lead with a result against Crystal Palace.
Palace led for much of the match after an early goal from Ismaila Sarr, but Federico Chiesa’s controversial equaliser brought Liverpool level late on. Mohamed Salah had appeared to handle the ball before it reached Chiesa, but the goal stood despite a VAR review.
Once again, a former Arsenal striker stepped up to the plate, with Eddie Nketiah controlling and volleying home a 97th-minute winner for Palace to end Liverpool’s unbeaten start to the season.
The task for Arsenal now is to ensure those late goals don’t go to waste, and that they secure a result away to Newcastle United on Sunday.
