Marcus Thuram was a “driving force” for Inter Milan in their Serie A opener against Genoa, while Yann Sommer was “shambolic.”

This is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

Inter did not get their Serie A season off to the start that they had hoped to.

The Nerazzurri were only able to come away with a point from the Marassi after Genoa equalized in stoppage time of their first match of the season.

It was an especially bitter pill for Inter to swallow as they had more or less controlled the match for long spells.

The Nerazzurri had more than two thirds of possession. And over the course of the match they were able to create promising chances, particularly in the first half.

But it was in the big moments that the match was defined. At both ends of the pitch.

Marcus Thuram Shines But Yann Sommer Not Up To Par For Inter Vs Genoa

In attack, the big moments came from Thuram.

The Frenchman was by far the Inter player who provided the most inspiration in attack, argues the Gazzetta.

By contrast, Nerazzurri captain Lautaro Martinez struggled to impact the match. He clearly showed a lack of sharpness due to his lack of preseason preparation.

But Thuram looked up for the match, as he was extremely lively in the penalty area.

The Frenchman also had the technique to match that energy. His header for Inter’s opener was perfect, whilst he timed and executed his finish very well for Inter’s second.

At the other end of the pitch, though, goalkeeper Sommer was culpable for the first goal that Inter conceded.

The 35-year-old’s failure to catch a high ball led to the ball bouncing right off the crossbar to the feet of Genoa defender Alessandro Vogliacco.

Moreover, Sommer looked shaky in possession throughout the match.
