The extension of Vincent Kompany’s contract at FC Bayern was more than just a sporting signal. Uli Hoeneß has now revealed that the international coaching market also played a role
In October 2025, Munich extended the contract with their head coach early until 2029 – a clear commitment to the Belgian’s work. As Hoeneß explained in an interview with kicker, there was more behind the decision. „It was mainly conviction, the other was a small ulterior motive,“ Hoeneß explained when asked about Manchester City’s interest in Kompany
The message was clear: „We wanted to express that we are completely convinced of his work and that he is a coach who can inspire people here for a long time.“
The honorary president thus underlined that the focus was on Kompany’s sporting development, while Bayern also apparently wanted to establish facts at an early stage – in a coaching market that is increasingly dominated by financially strong clubs
Hoeneß, however, hinted that international interest was definitely an issue, with clubs from England in particular, including Manchester City, keeping a close eye on the 39-year-old’s development
The long-time Bayern patron made it clear how big the financial differences are in international comparison: „There are already clubs that can entice you with money, they no longer know the difference between gross and net.“
Such factors are playing an increasingly important role in the coaching market in particular, but Hoeneß put things into perspective: „Top stars and top coaches don’t necessarily change because of an extra million – but they do with five or ten more.“

Recently, Kompany has been repeatedly touted as a possible successor to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, with reports suggesting that the English club could even be prepared to pay a transfer fee in the double-digit million range
But the situation in Munich is clear: the Belgian has signed a long-term contract – including his coaching team – and enjoys the full confidence of the club’s management
Despite the ongoing speculation, a short-term departure is considered unlikely and Kompany himself is said to have no interest in leaving FC Bayern in the near future
The extension until 2029 was therefore not only a vote of confidence – but also a strategic move to secure himself against the competition on the international coaching market at an early stage.
