We beat WAC 1-0 on Matchday 22 of the ADMIRAL Bundesliga to move up to third in the table at the start of the championship group. A good start led to a deserved opener from Oscar Gloukh before we saw the lead home despite a second half that was difficult in periods.
While the wet and the cold in Salzburg today might not have looked too promising, our boys made a ferocious start regardless! The visitors - whose coach Dietmar Kühbauer watched from the stands due to suspension - had to drop back and try to contain us. They were not able to as we made our 80% of the early possession count on the scoreboard.
Oscar Gloukh showed how simple the art of goalscoring can be, sometimes. The Israeli received the ball from his attack partner Dorgeles Nene and placed a shot perfectly into the corner from 20 metres out (13'). We did not want to contend ourselves with the early lead and continued to attack with verve, creating a few good opportunities before the break - none of which found their way in. WAC rarely threatened in the first half, only once breaking through our lines - leading to Alex Schlager making a strong double save when any goal may not have counted due to a possible offside, in any case.
The second half was a more difficult watch at times. Our boys continued to control the play, but it got a bit disjointed in the difficult conditions. WAC threw everything forward to try to equalise – but there was no way past Alex Schlager today. We thought briefly we had made it 2-0, only for the assistant referee to dash those hopes as Nene had strayed a fraction offside before receiving a great ball from Daghim. We were able to secure the home win regardless as we overtook WAC into third in the table.
The points will now be divided before the championship group starts after the upcoming international break. We will find our remaining ten fixtures in the coming days. Here is how the table looks currently (before points are divided in two):
The manner was not important at all, but it was just important that we ended the regular season with a win. We have to remain just as solid defensively in the championship group while getting sharper going forward - as we made it more difficult than it should have been today. You can't be happy, of course, as FC Red Bull Salzburg, to be third at the end of the regular season, but things are changing with the points divided and we are right back in the title race. I think it will be the most exciting championship group yet!
Thomas Letsch
We started well but then made life difficult for ourselves. We were playing with fire at times - but a win before the international break will do us well! We are rightly where we are in the table. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but if we do that, anything is possible. We are therefore concentrating on ourselves, and anything else that happens, happens.
