Arsenal are on the brink of the Premier League title after a nervy win over Burnley on Monday evening left Manchester City with no margin for error as the race reaches its conclusion.

Man City closed the gap to two points last Wednesday with a straightforward win over Crystal Palace but Arsenal took that back out to five thanks to Kai Havertz’s first-half header in an unconvincing 1-0 victory over the already-relegated Clarets.

City, who now look set to lose boss Pep Guardiola come the end of the season, take on Bournemouth away on Tuesday evening knowing that anything other than a victory will mathematically hand the title to the Gunners.

Even if Guardiola’s side can see off the Cherries to take the title race to the final day, all Arsenal would need is a win over Crystal Palace on Sunday to clinch their first Premier League crown for 22 years.

And it could be an even more historic season for the Gunners after they progressed past Atletico Madrid to reach their first Champions League final in 20 years, and will face PSG in Budapest on Saturday 30 May.

Arsenal

Played: 37 | Points: 82 | GD: +43

Remaining fixtures:

  • Sunday 24 May: Crystal Palace (a)
  • Saturday 30 May: PSG (Champions League final)

Man City

Played: 36 | Points: 77 | GD: +43

Remaining fixtures:

  • Tuesday 19 May: Bournemouth (a)
  • Sunday 24 May: Aston Villa (h)

When could Arsenal win the Premier League?

Arsenal’s victory over Burnley has put them on the brink of glory and they will win the title away from the pitch with a game to spare if Man City slip up at Bournemouth on Tuesday.

If City win on the south coast, the title race continues to a final-day showdown.

If they beat Bournemouth on Tuesday evening, Man City would take the title race to the final day of the season, where Arsenal are away at Crystal Palace and Guardiola’s side host Aston Villa.

Guardiola’s side would then need to beat Villa, who will have played a European final four days earlier, and hope that Arteta’s men don’t beat Palace, who will be preparing for a European final a few days later, in order to snatch the title and give their manager the perfect send-off.
