Tuesday's 1-1 draw with Charlton Athletic proved to be the last straw for Ramsay, who failed to win any of his nine games in charge of West Brom.

The Baggies have not won in the Championship since their 2-1 victory over Queens Park Rangers on 29 December, leaving them in serious relegation trouble.

Albion's draw with Charlton means they sit just one point clear of the drop zone, with 22nd-place currently occupied by Leicester City, who have faced a six-point deduction.

West Brom's decision to appoint Ramsay last month always appeared to be a risk, as he had a lack of Championship experience, joining the Baggies from Major League Soccer side Minnesota United.

The 34-year-old would fail to yield a single win in nine attempts, causing him to be sacked just over a month after moving to the Hawthorns.

West Brom fans... How worried are you by the threat of relegation? Comment below!

Former Baggies striker Charlie Austin told talkSPORT on Wednesday: "West Brom and Leicester are both down there, it’s quite shocking. When you look at that appointment, that was wrong. The pedigree wasn’t there to go to a club like West Brom, to go to the Championship.

"It really wasn’t. We keep rolling the dice. It’s a gamble they’ve taken, and unfortunately, could be a gamble that they’re going to pay the price. I don’t get it, when a club like Celtic did it with Wilfried Nancy.

"It’s painful, let’s be honest. That appointment Celtic made could cost them the title up there, and West Brom could cost them Championship football. They could be going to League One."

West Brom's next managerial appointment has to be spot on

The Championship season has unfolded in an intriguing manner, which has seen Leicester, who were in the Premier League last season, and West Brom, who previously boasted play-off aspirations, battling against relegation to League One.

While the Foxes' financial issues have been demonstrated by their six-point deduction, the Baggies have endured a lack of managerial stability in recent years.

Albion were gutted when the largely successful and highly popular Carlos Corberan left the Black Country to take charge of Spanish outfit Valencia in December 2024.

West Brom then thought that their former boss, Tony Mowbray, would be the man to guide them to the play-offs last term, but instead sacked the then 61-year-old after just three months in charge.

The Baggies approached this season with optimism under the stewardship of ex-Tottenham interim manager Ryan Mason, but the Englishman struggled for consistency and was dismissed from his duties following 10 consecutive away defeats in the Championship.

Ramsay's appointment, therefore, was made to help steer Albion away from trouble, but has instead exacerbated their relegation worries.

West Brom's squad includes talented attackers such as Isaac Price and Mikey Johnston, as well as solid defenders like Callum Styles and Nat Phillips.

Therefore, it is no surprise that the Hawthorns side began the season with aspirations of securing a play-off spot for the second time in three seasons.

However, the Baggies instead find themselves staring at the prospect of relegation to League One, and owner Shilen Patel must choose his next head coach incredibly wisely.
