Liverpool head to the Orange Velodrome on Wednesday night to face Olympique Marseille in a Champions League clash that could shape their European ambitions.
With automatic qualification for the last 16 still within reach, the Reds will be hoping to get back to winning ways on the continental stage.
Liverpool have wobbled in the Premier League. But their Champions League form has been somewhat stable, with Arne Slot’s side winning four of their six games (L2).
Wins over the two Madrid giants and a statement victory at San Siro Stadium have reminded everyone of the Reds’ ability to rise on the biggest stage.
Their most recent European outing summed that up perfectly.
Against Inter Milan on matchday six, Liverpool arrived as slight underdogs but left with all three points after a Dominik Szoboszlai penalty sealed a 1-0 win.
That result moved Slot’s side to the brink of the top eight in the league phase.
Liverpool are just one point behind eighth-placed Atalanta, but they can’t afford to drop points tonight, with the race to finish in the top eight heating up.
The Reds are heading into this fixture on the back of a disappointing 1-1 draw against relegation-threatened Burnley at Anfield.
The result also saw Liverpool make unwanted history, becoming the first reigning Premier League champions to fail to beat any newly promoted side at home in a single season.
Slot could make two changes from the side that failed to dispatch Burnley.
Alisson is poised to keep his place in goal, but Andrew Robertson could come in for Milos Kerkez to complete the back four alongside Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, and Jeremie Frimpong.
Alexis Mac Allister could also return to the XI to partner Ryan Gravenberch in place of Curtis Jones, who dropped a 6/10 performance against Burnley.
That tweak could see Szoboszlai push further up the pitch where he’ll be joined by Florian Wirtz and Cody Gakpo.
Hugo Ekitike has scored four times in his last six games and should continue to lead the line in the absence of record-signing Alexander Isak.
