Bayern star Joshua Kimmich suffered a capsule injury in his ankle with the German national team. The 30-year-old has now provided an update on his physical condition.

Joshua Kimmich, captain and central fixture in national team coach Julian Nagelsmann’s squad, injured his ankle in training in Wolfsburg on Wednesday. However, the 30-year-old gave the all-clear on Friday evening – and clearly expects to return.

„I assume so,“ said Kimmich on RTL shortly before kick-off of the match against Luxembourg, where the midfielder had to miss out through injury but was optimistic that he would be fit for the next game.

Nagelsmann had previously stated that the injury was „not dramatic“ and that Kimmich would „not be out forever“ – a diagnosis that the captain has now confirmed himself.

DFB squad still plagued by injuries

Nevertheless, Kimmich’s absence came at an inopportune time for the team. The list of missing international players is already long: Marc-André ter Stegen, Antonio Rüdiger, Benjamin Henrichs, Jamal Musiala, Kai Havertz, Tim Kleindienst and Niclas Füllkrug are still missing. In addition, centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck was injured and Karim Adeyemi is suspended.

Bayern professional Jonathan Tah took over the captain’s armband in Luxembourg, with Ridle Baku moving to right-back and Leon Goretzka and Aleksandar Pavlovic playing in midfield.

However, Nagelsmann emphasized that Kimmich also has a central role off the pitch: „He has the gift of leading a team even when he’s not playing.“

The national coach thus underlined how important the Bayern star’s presence remains for structure, communication and stability.

Kimmich made it clear in the RTL interview that the team not only had to pick up the necessary points – they also had to perform convincingly. „It’s about the manner,“ emphasized the captain with a view to the match against Slovakia.
