Sheffield Wednesday are currently bottom of the Championship table with minus six points

Sheffield Wednesday have had a disastrous last 12 months both on and off the pitch.

The Owls have been in administration since October, with significant financial issues plaguing the club under previous owner Dejphon Chansiri.

It is hoped that a new owner can be installed soon as David Storch's takeover edges closer to completion, but it won’t be enough to salvage something from this season on the pitch.

Henrik Pedersen’s side have been deducted 18 points by the EFL, which has left them on minus six through the first 39 games of the campaign.

The first 12 were docked due to going into administration, while another six were taken off due to breaching the league’s financial rules.

As a result, Sheffield Wednesday were officially relegated from the Championship as early as February, with a 2-1 loss to rivals Sheffield United confirming their place in the bottom three.

The points Sheffield Wednesday should have

Sheffield Wednesday currently have minus six points, but without the 18 they were deducted then they would be on 12.

While the Owls would still be relegated with that many, it would still be more uplifting for the team and supporters if they were able to get back to a positive points total before the campaign finishes.

Using the expected points (xPTS) totals from Opta’s supercomputer, the Yorkshire outfit should already have a positive points total.

Based on the expected goals for and against (xG and xGA) from the team’s games this season, Pedersen’s side have earned an xPTS of 25.4.

Their xG is 32.1 and their xGA is 77.1, meaning they have still been the worst team in the entire division so far this term.

However, the extent of their poor performances has been exaggerated from bad finishing streaks at either end of the table.

Sheffield Wednesday have only scored 29, and have conceded 79, so they have under-performed on both xG and xGA.

And despite the under-performance of both metrics only being minor, it has had an adverse impact on their points total vs xPTS.

Leaving aside the 18 points Sheffield Wednesday have been deducted, Sheffield Wednesday have under-performed xPTS by 13 points, earning 12 from an xPTS of 25.

Sheffield Wednesday will be hoping to fare better under new owners

A group led by David Storch was named as the new preferred bidder to buy Sheffield Wednesday in March.

The American will be keen to seal the deal as quickly as possible so that work can begin on building a team that can compete in League One.

No immediate timeline has been given for when the EFL will ratify his takeover of the Championship side, but it is hoped that it will come quite soon.

The earlier that work can begin on investing in the squad, the more likely the club are to be able to reverse the trends seen on the pitch this season.

It has been a difficult year for the team and its supporters, particularly with just one win under their belt from 39 games.

Fans will be hoping to see a victory at Hillsborough again in the near future, with their last home win coming on 21 April 2025 against Middlesbrough.
