La Liga giants Barcelona could be entitled to a significant payout on the part of FIFA, for the damages suffered by way of Frenkie de Jong’s injury setback at the World Cup.

Midfielder De Jong of course saw his name take its place front and centre in the headlines in Catalunya’s capital earlier this week.

After returning from international duty with the Netherlands for a medical check in Barcelona, the former Ajax man was revealed to be sporting a serious knee injury.

De Jong is understood to have played through the pain barrier at the World Cup, requiring injections in his knee for his country’s fixtures against both Tunisia and Morocco.

Early estimates suggest that the 29-year-old could now be facing up to a spell of four months on the sidelines.

And should this prove to be the case, Barcelona will be owed a considerable sum from World Cup organisers, FIFA.

As per a report from Mundo Deportivo:

‘The compensation covers the period between the injury and the player’s medical clearance. If he were out for four months, Barça would receive approximately €2.4 million.’
