We looked at how much Bristol Rovers may need to pay striker Macaulay Langstaff in wages if he joins the club from Millwall this summer.
Bristol Rovers are preparing for life back in League Two following their relegation from League One last season.
It looked as though Bristol Rovers were comfortably heading for safety last season when they sat as many as nine points clear of the relegation zone in mid-March, but a horror run of form that saw them pick up just one point from their final 10 games condemned them to the drop.
The Gas parted company with head coach Inigo Calderon in May, and he was replaced by Darrell Clarke, who has returned to the Memorial Stadium for a second spell after previously managing the club between 2014 and 2018, during which time he led them to back-to-back promotions from the National League to League One.
Clarke has wasted no time in getting to work on rebuilding his squad, with seven new signings arriving so far this summer in Brad Young, Luke Southwood, Macauley Southam-Hales, Alfie Kilgour, Jack Sparkes, Josh McEachran and Ryan Howley, and there are likely to be plenty more to come before the end of the transfer window.
After bolstering his defence, strengthening the forward line is believed to be Clarke's next priority, and according to Bristol Live, Millwall striker Macaulay Langstaff is one player on Rovers' radar.
Bristol Rovers were said to be keen to bring Jonson Clarke-Harris back to the club this summer, but he is now expected to join Turkish second division side Pendikspor after being released by Rotherham United, meaning Clarke will need to look elsewhere in his search for a new striker.
Bristol Live claim that Langstaff is "a player the club admires", but the Gas could be set for further disappointment as a deal to bring him to the Memorial Stadium is believed to be "extremely unlikely", particularly with a host of League One clubs keen on the 28-year-old.
After scoring 70 goals and providing 11 assists in 96 games during a prolific two-year spell at Notts County, Langstaff made the move to the Championship last summer with Millwall for a fee of £700,000 plus add-ons.
However, it was a frustrating debut season at The Den for Langstaff as he failed to nail down a regular place in the team, and that has raised big question marks about whether he has a long-term future with the Lions.
Reports that Rovers have made a bid for Langstaff are believed to be wide of the mark, but as the League Two outfit weigh up an ambitious move for the Millwall man, we looked at how much they may need to pay him in wages if he was to join the club.
According to Capology, Langstaff currently earns £7,500 per week and £390,000 per year at Millwall, although it should be stressed that those figures are an estimate.
Of course, those are still significant numbers, but Langstaff receives much less than some of the Lions' top earners, including Japhet Tanganga (£35,000 per week), Joe Bryan (£32,500 per week), Luke Cundle (£15,000 per week), Jake Cooper (£11,538 per week) and Danny McNamara (£11,000 per week).
Bristol Rovers were said to have a weekly wage bill of £120,185 and an annual wage bill of £6,249,600 last season, and as they attempt to balance the books following relegation, they may need to reduce their payroll, which could make it difficult for them to afford Langstaff.
Langstaff is believed to be keen to remain at Millwall this summer and fight for his place in the team, and with strong League One interest in his services, it would be tough for the Gas to secure a deal for the striker even if he was to leave The Den.
However, given that Langstaff scored 29 goals in 49 games during his last season in League Two for Notts County, Rovers may feel that he is worth pushing the boat out for as they target an immediate return to the third tier.
