Dan Neil has been linked with a move to Sheffield United and Coventry City this January
Sunderland midfielder Dan Neil has emerged as a January transfer target for Coventry City and Sheffield United.
It was exclusively revealed by FLW that the Blades are keen on signing the Premier League player this month.
Meanwhile, Ben Jacobs has claimed that the Sky Blues are also looking to sign the 24-year-old, who has fallen out of favour this season.
The Black Cats have enjoyed a strong first season back in the Premier League, but Neil has made just three appearances in the top flight, amounting to 14 minutes of action.
Here we use estimated figures from Capology to see how much Neil earns at Sunderland amid interest from Sheffield United, Coventry and reportedly Rangers…

Neil came through the academy system at Sunderland to cement himself as a key part of their push for promotion back to the Premier League.
This culminated in him making 44 starts from 46 Championship fixtures last season as Régis Le Bris’ side earned a play-off place, which saw them earn victories over both Coventry and Sheffield United to win a place in the Premier League.
He contributed two goals and three assists, and was ever-present as the club made a return to the top flight, so it’s no surprise that his lack of game time now has led to such intense January interest.
Given the 24-year-old’s contract is now set to expire in 2026, an exit from the Stadium of Light looks likely before the 2 February deadline.
Neil’s contract is currently worth £15,000 per week, making him one of the lesser paid players in the Sunderland squad.
Their highest earners are Granit Xhaka and Nordi Mukiele, who were both signed in the summer following the play-off win against the Blades.
The pair are paid £110,000 and £100,000, respectively, which dwarfs Neil’s salary with the Wearside outfit.
Enzo Le Fée, Simon Adingra, Omar Alderete, Bertrand Traoré, Brian Brobbey and Habib Diarra all also receive more than £50,000, highlighting the gap between players like Neil and the new additions to the squad from last year.

Coventry and Sheffield United have a total payroll of £249,000 and £542,000 per week, which is significantly less than Sunderland’s weekly amount of £1.3 million.
The £15,000-a-week earned by Neil would give him the same salary as Brandon Thomas-Asante at the CBS Arena, as well as Tyrese Campbell, Andre Brooks, Callum O’Hare and Sam McCallum at Bramall Lane.
The highest earners in Frank Lampard’s squad are Luke Woolfenden, Matt Grimes, Ellis Simms and Haji Wright, who all receive £25,000 per week, which is much more comparable to Neil’s salary at Sunderland.
Meanwhile, summer signing Japhet Tanganga is by himself at the top of the wage bill in Chris Wilder’s team, with the defender earning £35,000 per week.
However, Tom Davies, Danny Ings and Gustavo Hamer all also earn £30,000-a-week, meaning there are four players in the Sheffield United squad with a higher salary than anybody in the Coventry first team.
