Leicester have had a difficult summer since their relegation from the Premier League, with a lengthy delay to firing and replacing former manager Ruud van Nistelrooy and the possibility of financial breaches hanging heavy in the air.

The best potential cure for such a state of affairs would be a quick return to the top-flight, but this requires players of the calibre to deliver it and such players do not come cheap.

One such player with whom Leicester have been connected is the former Nottingham Forest left-back Harry Toffolo, who was released by the club upon the end of his contract and is under consideration by the Foxes. Toffolo is an excellent player, a versatile left-sided defender, but he might not come cheap.

Harry Toffolo's wage at Nottingham Forest

Leicester City will not have to pay a transfer fee for Toffolo, but his wages may well turn out to be a not-inconsiderable expense.

Capology estimates that Toffolo's Nottingham Forest wage was £35,000-a-week. That's an amount of money that is affordable when you've got more than £100 million a year in television money coming through, but it becomes a slightly different matter once relegation occurs.

Leicester will be in receipt of parachute payments next season, which gives them a significant advantage over many other Championship clubs, but relegation also still represents a substantial drop in their income. It is, therefore, imperative that they spend their money wisely this summer.

Leicester City have had huge financial issues since the pandemic

Capology also have a list of the highest-paid players in the Championship, and such a wage would put Toffolo among the thirty or so best paid players in the entire division. And what may concern Leicester fans is how many of their players are among that top thirty or so.

Of the 14 highest-paid Championship players, ten are Leicester players, and that's all the more an issue when we consider the state of the club's accounts since the pandemic. The club's owners have lost a lot of money with a collapse in tourism, and this has been reflected in the club's financial losses.

All of this points towards the difficult decisions that have to be made at The King Power Stadium this summer. The best players are often the most expensive, and Leicester need a return to the Premier League more than most, from an existential perspective. But the risks of getting it wrong in a division in which fine margins can be really important - and the Championship is looking highly competitive for next season - can be massive.

Leicester cannot afford to land in even more hot water than they're already in. Points deductions may already be looming. But they, perhaps more than any other club in the division, cannot afford to miss out on a quick return to the Premier League. It all feels like a huge gamble, and one they literally cannot afford to get wrong.
