FLW takes a look at how much Manchester United may have to pay West Ham United's Mateus Fernandes in wages

West Ham United's relegation from the Premier League means the Hammers will see a huge loss in revenue, and, over the summer, will need to mitigate those losses by raising funds via player sales, with one player in particular linked with a lucrative move.

Wolverhampton Wanderers, Burnley, and West Ham are the three teams heading down to the Championship from the Premier League next season, with the Hammers' relegation in particular coming as a catastrophic blow to the East London club.

The Hammers, despite relegation, will still have an abundance of riches to play around with in the transfer market, orchestrated by Nuno Espirito Santo, but first, they will likely have to make some important sales.

The likes of Jarrod Bowen, Crysencio Summerville, and El Hadji Malick Diouf are among just a few players touted as big saleable assets the club may consider parting ways with over the coming months, but Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes appears as though he will be their most lucrative sale this summer.

Fernandes, 21, has suffered back-to-back relegations from the Premier League with Southampton and now West Ham, but despite this, he has excelled, attracting interest from European juggernauts Real Madrid and Manchester United, as FLW takes a look at how much the Red Devils may have to pay Fernandes to lure him to Old Trafford.

Fernandes' career trajectory, despite two relegations in a row, has been meteoric.

The midfielder came through the ranks at Sporting CP, where a loan to top-flight side Estoril Praia in the 2023/24 season put his name on the radar of teams across Europe, as Southampton brought him to the United Kingdom for around £15 million in the summer of 2024.

He'd make 36 Premier League appearances in his debut year for the Saints as they were relegated, but despite this, West Ham parted ways for upwards of £40 million to bring him to the capital, where he has since once again made 36 appearances but suffered another relegation.

Fernandes was one of the bright lights in a dim year for the Hammers, and now, a move in excess of £80 million to the likes of Real Madrid and Man United has been touted, as his career trajectory continues its swift upwards trend.

According to estimates from Capology, Fernandes earns around £60k per week at the London Stadium, and being under contract until the summer of 2030, he will almost certainly be looking for another bumper pay rise this summer if he is to move on.

His previous contract at Southampton was only estimated to be worth around £20k per week, and with Man United having all the riches in the world, he may well be looking to treble his wages yet again to around £180k per week.

This weekly wage would put him alongside players such as Matheus Cunha and Harry Maguire, who earn just shy of £200k per week at the Red Devils currently, and Fernandes will see no reason as to why he shouldn't be earning the same if he were to make this blockbuster switch.

Fernandes will almost certainly be demanding a wage in excess of £100k per week at the very least, should he make the move to the North West, with a more likely sum being in and around the £120k per week mark, putting him level with the likes of Manuel Ugarte, Amad Diallo, and Lisandro Martinez.

Either way, should Fernandes make the move from West Ham to Man United, he is almost certainly set for a bumper pay increase from his current £60k per week wages, as the Hammers looked to decrease their weekly wage bill.

Nuno Espirito Santo must use the Mateus Fernandes money to West Ham United's advantage

With Fernandes looking certain to move on once again following West Ham's relegation, the Hammers will be looking to get every penny they can for him in the event of a sale.

It was previously reported that the club needed to obtain up to £100 million in player sales in the event of relegation following the loss of Premier League revenue, and Fernandes' sale would cover a large sum of that, whilst also shifting his wages off the books.

Nuno must look to reinvest that money to the best of his ability this summer as he looks to guide the Hammers to an immediate return to the top-flight.
